Clifftop Homes Are Under Threat While Officials Seek Help In California

Posted on December 15, 2015 By

The coastal homes are in danger in San Francisco after the heavy lashing of rains and waves are hitting the coastal cliffs. Residents in the cliff top apartments are forced to move out by US Rep Jackie Speier and other federal and local officials talked to the residents. Speier is the resident of the coastal city and had sought out assistance to repair the crumbling cliffs earlier. Meanwhile, officials declared 20 units unsafe to live and asked the residents to leave immediately by sunset. It was also reported by CBS affiliate KPIX that some inmates refused to leave while others were looking for some place to stay.

One of the resident, Michelle Mackay told KPIX that there are buildings that are standing for five years after the damage and moving out 20 families and their pets is absurd she said. Mackay also informed that there was no fresh damage since the New Year, and many people cannot afford to move out. Living on monthly paychecks, it is hard to move out informed Michelle as there is no place to go. Meanwhile, Pacifica officials declared a local state emergency after a storm damage just 10 miles south of San Francisco. It may be remembered that during El Nino in 1998, the bluffs were eroded, and the residents just managed to escape before the home was drawn into the ocean. Many homes knocked out of the cliff. In the year 2010, two apartments were evacuated on the bluff. The storm is expected to continue till March, which may not be a good news for Pacifica that is a victim of coastal erosion.

Poor School Infrastructure Take Detroit Teachers To Court

Posted on November 25, 2015 By

Shabby school conditions force the teachers’ union in Detroit to file a case in the district seeking to repair the poor conditions and remove the Emergency Manager Darnell Earley appointed by the state. The suit was filed on Thursday in the Wayne County Circuit Court to repair the deplorable conditions in the district. The petition held that the health of 46,000 students is in great danger. The Associated Press sought comments from the district spokeswomen, but she was not in a position to comment on the issue. The judge refused to give a temporary restraining order on rolling teachers sick-outs in connection with the low pay, overcrowded classrooms, unsafe building structure, and others.

During a visit the media in the early January at Spain Elementary School, kindergarteners were sitting in a room too cold for a five-year-olds. The hallway had mold stench explained the reporter. The school section has been closed. The rain water gets into the school, and there is water leakage from the roof causing mildew stench in the rooms. The swimming pool is under repair. The gym teacher Andre Harlan told the news reporter that the conditioning is done in the hallway. The financial management of the Detroit Public School was taken over by the state in 2009, and the debt stands at $515 million for the district. The interim head of teachers’ union Ivy Bailey said that people were only talking, and nothing happened to it forcing them to take to the court. With educators being snubbed at every effort to bring about repairs in the school the option left was to go to court informed Bailey.

Lead-Tainted Water A Cause Of Concern For Flint Residents

Posted on October 23, 2015 By

Residents of Flint depend on Flint river water, but the corrosive nature of the river has broken down their pipes and lead have started to enter the supply. It has become a cause of concern as children are reported to have doubled the lead levels. State troopers and volunteers are supplying canned water and filters to the residents post the state of emergency being declared in the city by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder. Commenting on this a Flint resident lamented that despite paying for water bills they had to buy water. The water in Flint was declared unsafe in October last year. But reports have it that the state was aware of the situation since July.

Post the water switch in 2014 the interstate health study identified high lead levels in children. The residents were not informed about the alarming levels of lead in the water, and they were allowed to drink the water for two months. In this connect Governor Snyder went to Flint on Monday and apologized for the present condition. The governor’s words were not appealing to the residents as they found it hollow. A resident of Flint Elena Richardson said that she was worried about her children as the pediatrician informed her of contaminated water leading to skin rashes and mouth sores. She added that it is sad when nobody cares, especially because Synder doesn’t stay here informs Richardson.

Another resident of Flint Gladys Williams said, “We’re the walking dead. We just haven’t had the dirt thrown upon us yet.”

Moreover, Snyder while talking to the reporters said that the experts said that the high lead level is only seasonal. It was only on October 1 the lead levels were confirmed said the governor. The Federal Justice Department will be conducting an investigation into this affair.
